The Playboy girls of Rome in 1962…
The February 1962 edition of Playboy featured a six page spread of aspiring Italian models, actresses and socialites so we thought we would take a closer look at each of them. Looking back at these photographs it is worth remembering that these women will now be in their sixties and seventies and one wonders what they make of the photographs now? A sense of pride one would assume, the photography is tasteful and they appeared on the pages of one of the world’s biggest selling publications.
The lady in red is Antonella Lualdi, described as a ‘Syrian-born voluptuous movie veteran at 21’ she appeared in a number of Italian and French films in the 50s and 60s before turning to singing in the mid seventies. She was born in 1931 which would make her ten years older than Playboy suggested!
Next up is Tania Dragos, an actress who had a small part in the 1960 comedy la Dolce Vita. Playboy described her as “living her own sweet life in the baroque opulence of a Palatine pad”
Anna Fillippini, a pianist and actress starred in ‘The Brigand’ (1961) ‘Il Moralista’ (1959) and ‘Le Notti Bianchi’ (1957) Here she ‘leans from the balcony of her ultrachic digs overlooking the Piazza di Spagna”
Janine Jacquin, a Paris born model is shown ‘lounging languidly between shootings and showings’. We cannot find any further information on her career since.
Barbara Nelli starred in a number of films from 1964 until 1970, sometimes under the pseudonym Barbara Nelly in titles such as ‘From 007: Intrigue in Lisbon’ to ‘Our Man in Casablanca’. Here, Barbara “observes the daily Roman ceremony: the mid-afternoon siesta”
Next we see ‘flaxen-haired Gesa Meiken, a recent emigrant from Hamburg, debuts on screen this year in Boccaccio ’70, a much-heralded spectacular’.
We love this photograph of socialite Lina Sotis, born in 1944 she was married the year the photograph was published but divorced five years later. The photograph was taken in the Palazzo Orsini.
Wading ‘winsomely into the Tyrrhenian at the Ostia Lido’ is the wonderfully named Gabriella Botticelli..
The beautiful Anita Pallenberg is photographed ‘nursing an espresso at a sidewalk café’. Pallenberg is best known for her relationships with Rolling Stones guitarists Brian Jones and Keith Richards.
There is one significant omission, the stunning Claudia Cardinale, shown here as ‘a beautiful new star and touted as a rival to BB’. Here at Retro Culturati we believe she deserves a post or two all of her own.
We love the feel of these shots, it was a wonderful time in glamour photography and we salute the women and photographers who have given us these marvellous memories.
