The Voice in The Warriors

Lynne Thigpen as the DJ in ‘The Warriors’…

djOne of the most watched beta-max videos during my teen years in the early 80s was without doubt, the cult gang film, The Warriors. Released in 1979 it was my introduction to the street gangs of America, an environment as far removed from my own as was possible to get and yet, for reasons to this day I cannot quite fathom, it captured my young imagination and remains a loveable old favourite.

There have been many occasions in which I have been tempted to watch it again, I saw it thirteen times at my last count, circa 1983 but I have resisted. You know how it is, it’s seldom the same the fourteenth time around. But there is one piece of that film which, thirty two years on still gives me the proverbial willies and that is the voice of Lynne Thigpen, the local, underground and somewhat renegade DJ cum radio announcer whose wonderful voice is at once both soft and menacing and gives the film a unique, haunting edge. The masterstroke was the filming of her lips and little else, it gave an almost ‘high priestess’ quality to her role and heightened the sense of tension as The Warriors race to find their way home and escape the various gang members hell bent on taking them down.

The voice belonged to an accomplished actress who appeared in many hit US television series between 1971 and 2003. She was a Tony award winner and was best known for her role as The Chief in the children’s educational series Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? There were appearances on The Cosby Show, LA Law, Roseanne, Sesame Street and film roles in the 2000 remake of Shaft, Tootsie and Streets of Fire amongst many, many others. She died of a brain haemorrhage in 2003 aged 54.

So, ‘for all you boppers out there’ here is the remarkable voice-over by Lynne Thigpen as the DJ in The Warriors…
